Tools of the Trade: What You Need (and Don’t Need) to Start a Travel Business from Home

Let’s be honest—starting anything new can feel a bit overwhelming, especially when you’re used to being on the booking side of travel, not the business side. But the truth is, launching your own home-based travel business doesn’t require a ton of complicated tech, a marketing degree, or piles of cash.

Whether you’re doing this around a full-time job, during school hours, or from your sun-lounger between trips—this guide is here to strip it all back.

Here’s what you really need (and what you absolutely don’t) to get started:

✅ What You DO Need

1. A Solid Host Agency or Travel Platform

This is your foundation. Choose a host company that offers:

  • Full accreditation (like ABTA, CLIA, or ATOL partners)
  • Ongoing training and support
  • Commission from major suppliers
  • A back-office system to manage bookings and payments
→ This is the bit that turns your passion into a proper, commission-earning business.

2. A Laptop, Tablet, or Smartphone

You don’t need a fancy desktop setup or ten screens. A reliable device with internet access is enough. Many reps run their business entirely from their phone while travelling!

3. Wi-Fi

Obvious but essential. If you can scroll Instagram, you can run this business.

4. A Curious Mind + Willingness to Learn

The travel industry is huge and ever-changing, but you don’t need to be an expert to start. What you need is:

  • Curiosity
  • A passion for travel
  • A willingness to follow systems and stay coachable
→ The best agents aren’t the ones who know it all—they’re the ones who are willing to learn.

5. A Simple Online Presence

A basic Facebook page or Instagram account to share your journey is enough at the start. No need for a website from day one (although you can build one later, if you want!).

❌ What You DON’T Need

✖ A Degree in Travel or Business

No qualifications are required. You’ll get full training through your host company, and most of it is bite-sized and beginner-friendly.

✖ Cold-Calling or Sales Experience

This is a relationship business, not a hard-sell one. People travel with people they trust. You don’t need to be pushy—just passionate.

✖ An Inventory or Stock

You’re not selling physical products or storing anything. Everything is booked directly with suppliers, and you get paid commission.

✖ Huge Start-Up Capital

Starting a traditional business often costs thousands. With a travel business, you’re usually looking at a small monthly overhead (for licensing, systems, and support)—often less than your weekly coffee bill!

✖ A Team (Unless You Want One!)

You can keep it simple and work solo, or build a team later if you want to grow. It’s totally flexible and up to you.

So, What’s the Bottom Line?

If you’ve got Wi-Fi, curiosity, and a love of travel—you already have what it takes to get started.

This business is about sharing your passion, helping others create memories, and earning commission for what you’re probably already doing: researching travel, planning holidays, and recommending great places to friends and family.

It’s low-risk, low-barrier, and high-reward if you put in the effort.
